Acne is a visible skin condition that forms redness and inflammation of the skin, leaving your skin with spots and marks. It is most common in adolescents but can be found in adults too, if left untreated. Acne occurs when your pores become blocked with sebum and dead cells which causes the marks and spots.



Acne has varying degrees of severity and can be present on anyone from teenagers to adults. Some common causes are:

» Increased levels of testosterone during puberty
» dead cells and sebum clogging your pores
» Corticosteroids and lithium, found in certain medication.
» Transferring hormones from the mother to child
» Some medical conditions such as Cushing’s syndrome
» Increase production of oil, dead skin cells, bacteria
» Pregnancy and periods

Acne is usually found on the face, chest, shoulders, and back. The different forms of acne are:

» Open pores often called blackheads
» Closed pores which are known as whiteheads
» Small, tender and red papules
» Pimples having pus at the tips
» Cystic lesions that form lumps with pus
